Claude Makelele in 2006-07, the defensive midfielder who changed football without scoring a single goal. Makelele was 34, still breaking up attacks, still making everyone around him look better. Real Madrid sold him to Chelsea in 2003 and immediately fell apart. Zinedine Zidane said "Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you're losing the entire engine?" Chelsea won back-to-back Premier Leagues in 2005 and 2006 because Makelele was the engine. This third kit is from when a 34-year-old defensive midfielder was Chelsea's most important player, and nobody even noticed.
